The United States has another multilateral regional trade agreement: the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR). This agreement with Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua eliminated tariffs on more than 80% of U.S. exports of non-textile goods. Analysts note that the impact of the agreement on trade is likely to be incremental, given that existing regional trade agreements have already reduced tariffs. But its geopolitical importance should not be underestimated, as Beijing seeks to increase its influence in the Asia-Pacific region. “The RCEP`s diplomatic message could be as important as the economy – a coup for China,” Citi Research wrote in a report released Sunday. Under the RCEP, the parts of all Member States would be treated in the same way, which could encourage companies in RCEP countries to look for suppliers in the commercial region. Two countries participate in bilateral agreements. Both countries agree to relax trade restrictions to expand business opportunities between them.
They reduce tariffs and give themselves privileged trade status. In general, the point of friction is important national industries that are protected or subsidized by the state. In most countries, they are active in the automotive, oil and food industries. The Obama administration negotiated with the European Union the world`s largest bilateral agreement, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. However, some WTO concerns have been expressed. According to Pascal Lamy, Director-General of the WTO, the dissemination of regional trade agreements (RTA) is “… is the concern of inconsistency, confusion, exponentially increasing costs for businesses, unpredictability and even injustice in trade relations.  The WTO is how typical trade agreements (called preferential or regional agreements by the WTO) are to some extent useful, but it is much more advantageous to focus on global agreements under the WTO, such as the ongoing Doha Round negotiations. ASEAN leaders said they intend to continue expanding trade with India and that the door remains open in New Delhi to join the bloc.
In total, the United States currently has 14 trade agreements with 20 different countries. The failure of Doha has enabled China to reach a global level of trade. It has signed bilateral trade agreements with dozens of countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Chinese companies have the right to develop the country`s oil and other raw materials. The heads of state and government of the signatories approved the terms of the Comprehensive Regional Economic Partnership (RCEP) at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Bangkok last year, with the agreement officially signed on Sunday. In a joint statement, the signatories said the trade agreement would play an important role in pandemic recovery plans and help build the region`s resilience through an “inclusive and sustainable post-pandemic economic recovery process.” The RCEP agreement covers 20 chapters on trade in goods and services, investment, temporary transport of individuals, rules of origin, customs procedures and trade facilitation, trade measures, intellectual property, competition, public procurement and institutional provisions.
